Twitter.com is now, officially, a thing of the past

All core systems at the social media firm have now moved over to X.com, according to owner Elon Musk

THE URL TWITTER.COM is now, officially, a thing of the past as all services have now been moved to X.com.

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of the micro-blogging platform, which has been one of the most-used and controversial social media websites in recent years, confirmed that the URL has now been changed for every user.

Musk, who is also the head of Tesla, SpaceX and other companies bought Twitter for $44 billion (€40.5 billion) in late 2022 and announced the rebrand to X last July.

The logo and branding was changed to “X” immediately last year however, the domain name remained Twitter.com until today. In a short post, Musk confirmed: “All core systems are now on X.com.”

When typing in the Twitter.com URL, the link will redirect users to X.com. The original domain name still appears on some browsers.

Musk has repeatedly used the letter X in the branding of his companies, starting in 1999 with his attempt to set up an online financial superstore called X.com. When he bought Twitter, he set up a company called X Corp to close the deal.

Musk vision for X, formerly Twitter (we know), is to transform the platform into a ‘super-app’, similar to China’s WeChat – which can be used for everything from messaging, calling and social media to mobile payments, news and online booking.

Musk’s leadership of X has proved controversial. He has fired thousands of staff, overseen major technical problems and reinstated accounts of right-wing conspiracy theorists, as well as former US president Donald Trump.

European regulators have also begun probes into X and other social media platforms over fears of misinformation. The EU demanded earlier this month that X explain its decision to cut content moderation staff, giving the firm a deadline of today.

X has yet to make a public response to the demands.

At least that’s what the media seem to call it lately.

X is the only platform that you will get real news, not like this platform and RTE, virgin etc spreading misinformation. The reason X is getting slated alot recently is because they won’t cooperate with the government, the government are now scared because the country are copping on to what’s really happening in this country and Europe.

@Andrew Martin: The reason it’s getting slated a lot lately might have something to do with the ‘For You’ page being a complete mess and not making any algorithmic sense other than pushing arguments on people, or the fact that someone could tweet that they enjoy ciabatta bread and they’d get a load of porn bots, blue tick accounts using AI responses to farm engagement saying ‘wow, great post man I totally agree’ and a few variations of ‘johneire827729′ telling them that they’re a race traitor to white people. Oh, and how the timeline randomly refreshes without prompting when you’ve just started reading a tweet.

That’s just a guess though, maybe people actually prefer that over it being a platform where you can have a laugh with people you follow, engage with your interests and post innocuous updates without a swarm of angry basement dwellers in your mentions.

@Andrew Martin: the fact that you can’t accept that misinformation is actively spread daily on all social media platforms shows just how removed from reality you are. Worrying really.

The last report I saw on this had Twitter ranked at number 42 in the App Store — while Threads is ranked at number 2.
    TikTok at 5.
    Instagram at 7.
    Facebook at 12.

Twitter isn’t even close to the same level as other social media platforms anymore.

@Nemethon: I’m not a fan and deleted it about 2 hours after opening it, but clearly it’s doing better than Twitter/X. Maybe most people prefer platforms that aren’t fuelled by ragebait. I was on Twitter for years, it could be great but it’s the worst for surviving on arguments no matter how innocuous the first post. I’ll stick to just keeping up with what my family and friends are doing and enjoying the photos they post now. Seeing them happy and enjoying themselves is better for the soul than reading arguments all day (she says on the Journal, I know).
